New Project for a New Year

So glad dear friends that you have stopped by to see some of the projects that I have been working on, so let’s get started!

Do you remember that in the corner of my sitting room is this old unsightly door? The door belonged to my boy’s room when they were small. We started a growth chart on the back of it. My oldest son got taller than the door! LOL Anyway, when we moved after 20 years I just couldn’t leave it behind. My grandchildren have their height on it as well, so there was just no throwing it out, it is kind of big and heavy chart. LOL

Well, when I was making my plans to change some things around in my apartment I knew that the door either had to be changed or moved. I have NO storage!

Here is what I did.

First of all I checked out the other side of the door and knew that I could use it and not have to worry about the measuring side. The door was pretty beat up and a terrible color. So I put a light brown acrylic paint wash all over the door, then wiped it down with a soft rag and let the paint go into all of the scratches and markings which were many. But it gave it the perfect patina that I wanted and didn’t just blend into the wall behind it. I also painted both sides of the door a soft grey blue.

Next I screwed some old curtain brackets to the top. This is where I started dressing the old door.

My Son had this old wired rack, we were going to chuck it when he said that I should keep it to make something out of it. I thought right I’ll just put it in my storage room! LOL I thought it would make a cute pin-up board of some kind. Well, yes it did! It was perfect for my new old door. I covered the back with some burlap and hand sewed it onto the frame. This is why I hung the curtain brackets.

I didn’t have a door knob to put on it but I did have this great necklace holder. I painted it to match the door then added wood glue and hot glue to hold it in place over the door knob hole.

I placed the door behind my TV set in the corner. I had a floating shelf that I attached underneath the wire rack. Now it was time to dress the door with pretties.

Being that I am getting ready for some Valentine decorating I decided to add some of it to the shelf and the rack. So up went antique Valentines, black & white photos, even a dried rose wreath. I’ll share that in a later post on how to make them.

Needless to say I was thrilled that I had fixed up the old door and it could be a useful piece in my home.

On the shelf I added and antique bowl of my great grandmothers, old rusty buckles, synch from a saddle and belt from my Dad, he never threw anything away.

Here is a full view without the TV set. I like it better this way. I had to place the rack and the shelf higher because of the TV.

So there it is! I’m really happy with the look of it and now I can dress it for every season and it’s not an eye sore. After this I really got my inspiration going I’ll show you more of that on a later post.

  1. Great makeover Anne! I can see that this is going to be a fun piece for you to ‘play’ with. Love that photo (I assume is your dad) on the horse. Grannies bowl is gorgeous! I have a link party, Share Your Cup Thursday. It’s about sharing the things that make you happy. I’d love if you linked up sometime!
    hugs,
    Jann
