A Hutch, Some Paint, and a Little Lace

Hello, and Welcome to Anne’s Attic – design! It has been a little lonely lately with not tending the grands as much as I am use to, but it has given me the chance to do some projects that I have wanted to do without little hands in the mix.

One of the projects that I have been excited about it redoing my hutch. The hutch is the only new piece of furniture that I have my little nest. Since it isn’t totally made of wood I have been hesitant to do my little shabby number on it. One thing that I have done is redo the backing on the hutch. I’ve only repainted it three times now, I ‘m just trying to get it right so it will fit in with the my old things that I am doing right now.

Finds hutch

This is what it looked like before I started to change it a little bit.

Here it is empty and ready for the change.

hutch paint color

This is the color that I have chosen to go on the back, a great French blue chalk paint from Vintage Market.

hutch lace (1)

This lovely lace backing will go up after the paint. This is the first time that I have used this product and I am thrilled with it. It is a lovely fabric type paper, very sturdy.

hutch painted

I used two coats of the Vintage Market Chalk paint and let it dry really good.

Then I cut the lace fabric to fit each section. I used those little glue dots to hang the lace. I didn’t want it to be permanent because I like to change things around to often. I love the way that the French blue paint looks under it.

hutch ruffle

I wanted a white lace edging on the shelves, but with the hutch being so white I was afraid that white lace wouldn’t show up. So I cut some brown craft paper and laid some of the lace over the top of it. Then made a scallop on the edges. It turned out perfect and really adds a lot of charm to the hutch.

hutch lace finish

The trim matches nice with the wood finish. Now for the fun part! Decorating it.

hutch full done

Here it is all finished. Can you believe that I left the ties on the drawers and cupboards? I do this because Tiny is getting into everything! Crazy me! Remember the hat box and the tote that I refinished? Well, now they have a perfect place to sit and look pretty. Here are some pictures of the vignettes that I have put together on the hutch.

I was able to use some of my new cream-wear finds in the hutch. My collection is getting bigger. I wanted to give the hutch a different look and I think that I achieved it.

  1. I liked how you left your options open to change the backing on the hutch and the use of the craft paper to make a scallop edge on the front of the hutch! Everything inside the hutch looks great, too.

  2. Jo,
I’ve never tried that paint… Your ideas embraced your hutch and your styling the shelves brings the eye in and invites exploring your lovely vignettes. Really turned out pretty.

  3. Jo,
It looks beautiful. I am thinking of using that lace in my bathroom cabinet. Thanks for the idea.
    Have a great day.

  4. Oh Jo, I am in love with your “new” hutch! What a stunning transformation, my friend. Will you come to my home and make it pretty? {{smiles}} Thanks for sharing with Roses of Inspiration….you always inspire me! Hugs!

  5. Jo I have a little pine corner hutch that I was just about to discard. But you’ve got me all fired up now! This is just lovely. Thankyou for the inspiration! Love, Mimi xxx

  6. This turned out so lovely! I could see that it was going to be fun to decorate and you did a wonderful job! Found you at Stephanie’s party!

  7. Jo, I love the blue with the lace backing! Really gives the hutch a sweet touch. Smart girl to think of hanging the craft paper behind the lace. Love your collection of pretty dishes! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
